Lake Placid Ski Resorts
Lake Placid is a hamlet in the town of North Elba, in Essex County, New York, United States. It is located in the Adirondack Mountains, about 160 miles (260 km) northwest of Albany and about 45 miles (72 km) southeast of Burlington, Vermont. It lies on the shore of Lake Placid, one of the most popular tourist destinations in upstate New York. Lake Placid is most well known for hosting the Winter Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1980.
Lake Placid is a great place to visit in the winter for skiing and snowboarding, as there are four ski resorts in the area. Titus Mountain is the closest ski resort to Lake Placid, and is only 8 miles (13 km) away. Whiteface Mountain is the largest ski resort in the area, and is only a 20-minute drive from Lake Placid. It is also home to the longest vertical descent in the Eastern United States, at 2,464 feet (752 meters).
The other two ski resorts in the area are Mount Van Hoevenberg and Cascade Mountain. Cascade Mountain is the smallest ski resort in the area, but it has the distinction of being the only ski resort in the United States that is owned and operated by the state government.
In addition to skiing and snowboarding, Lake Placid is also a great place to visit in the summer. There are plenty of hiking trails in the area, as well as lakes for swimming and fishing. The Olympic Village is also open for tours, and the Olympic Museum is a must-see for any Olympic fan.
